The word « Sudoku » comes from the Japanese for ‘single number’. The game, in its current form, was created in 1979 and was inspired from the Latin square. Sudoku was brought to Europe by a New-Zealander, who discovered the game during a stay in Japan. He developed a computer program over a number of years, which could create Sudoku puzzles automatically. He then took the game to The Times newspaper, in London, who published the first puzzle on November 12 2004. Sudoku became an overnight success and quickly spread around Europe.
