10 Sudoku techniques > 6. Isolated options

Previous page n°7 Isolated pairs

This Sudoku technique involves noting down all the possible positions for all the numbers from 1-9.

When you have noted down all the possible positions for all the numbers in the Sudoku puzzle, you will often find that a value appears only once in a row, column or region. This cell is the only possible position for the value and you can, consequently, enter the number directly into the cell.

In the puzzle opposite, the number 7 appears only once in column 1 (column 1, row 2). By a process of elimination, therefore, you can be sure that this cell corresponds to the value of 7. Another example can be found in column 4, where the number 5 appears only once and therefore cannot be placed elsewhere.
