This Sudoku
technique involves noting down all the possible positions for all the numbers from 1-9.
This Sudoku technique is similar to the isolated pairs technique, but with three identical options in three different cells. When there are three cells with three identical options in a row, column or region, these options can be eliminated from all the other cells in the same row, column or region. You may find that one of the three cells only has two possible values. However, these two values must correspond to two of the three values in each of the two remaining cells. In this case, all three options can be eliminated from the other cells in the same row, column or region. This technique is illustrated in the Sudoku puzzle opposite.
In the centre right region, have a look at the isolated triplets. In this region, the numbers 3, 4 and 8 must be placed in one of the three cells. We can therefore rule out these possibilities from the other cells in the centre right region. While this technique does not enable you to definitively place any values, at the very least, it allows you to narrow down the options and, consequently, make progress in the game.
